The Most Popular Dog Breed in New York City
What is the most popular dog breed in New York City?
Well, it depends upon who you ask.
According to the city’s Health Department (the agency that issues dog licenses) the most common breed in New York is… “unknown!”
Following that the top five breeds are:
Yorkshire Terrier
Shih Tzu
Chihuahua
Labrador Retriever
Maltese
The city says there are currently more than 35,000 active licenses for Yorkies!
If you turn to the American Kennel Club to find out what breed is the most popular in the Big Apple, the top five list is quite a bit different. These are the top five city dogs registered with the AKC:
French Bulldog
Poodle
Golden Retriever
Labrador Retriever
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
The Corgi was certainly a dark horse (is that a mixed metaphor?) I wasn’t expecting to see that breed was so popular in New York.
US News and World Report checked pet insurance industry data and found the most popular breeds in New York are:
Golden Retriever
Yorkshire Terrier
Goldendoodle
Shih Tzu
French Bulldog
If walking down the street is any indication, I’d have to say that Frenchies are the most popular breed in NYC.
